Seminar 2012 - Full Information
CPD SEMINAR
Examining Large Temporary Structures for Events
The UK events business is a vibrant and expanding sector of the UK economy. Promoting organisations such as Live Nation have an annual turnover in excess of £2 billion and attract more than half a million people to events each year. Television, sporting and religious events all take place in venues that require temporary structures. These structures are increasing in scale to accommodate larger audiences resulting in a greater consequence of failure. The collapse of a temporary structure during installation or use involves a high risk of serious injury, death and substantial property loss. The design of these structures is a critical function.
With the introduction of the European Standard BSEN 13782:2005, Temporary Structures – Tents – Safety, the IStructE Temporary Demountable Structures handbook and the ever growing numbers of large capacity tents at events, this seminar becomes even more vital to understand that guidance. Discussions will focus on the design, manufacture, installation and inspection of temporary structures with particular emphasis on long span fabric tented structures and large ground supported stages. We examine how these factors can influence the planning, licensing and organisation of events. Health and Safety issues are discussed along with an examination of installation techniques and issues. Several discussion sessions will be available throughout the course of the event.
After attendance at this seminar, you will the ability to:
· Inspect and certify portable structure installations provided you have adequate qualifications and experience
· Understand the interdependence of the structural design, operating conditions, shop drawings and manufacturing techniques of temporary structures
· Apply design principles for ground conditions, retaining anchors, structural components and rigging on projects
· Evaluate local weather conditions and how they relate to the structure
· Prevent temporary structure failure having developed insight into causes of failure
· Enhance safety on your projects by using the seminars checklist for inspection
In this intensive two-day seminar, you will learn about the essential elements of design, construction, and installation of temporary structures. In particular, the seminar will focus on manufacturing techniques, ground anchors, rigging, lift motors and gearing, and the importance of erection in varying wind and ground conditions. Discussion will take place on the load bearing capabilities of temporary structures and in particular lateral stability of large loads. The seminar highlights the failures that can occur when proper design is not completed, or when field modifications to designs are introduced without a full understanding of their implications. This includes unlawful and reckless removal of side guys and structural bracing on tents and stages. Current techniques employed in the inspection of temporary structures are also covered.
Who Should Attend:
Event organisers, consulting engineers, developers and builders; structural, construction, local authority and inspection engineers; event contractors; construction health and safety inspectors and specialists; design and construction engineers from industry who work on new construction, users of temporary structures for events and suppliers of construction equipment for scaffolding, forms, and work platforms.
